Marble winning and usage in Greece goes back to the pre-historic era.

During the Neolithic years the first marble figurines are uncovered. Marble miniature statues, known as feminine miniatures are being discovered by the archaeologists in different areas within Greece. Those findings are estimated to exist at around 5000 BC. Later, at approximately 3000 BC, the Cycladitic marmoreal statuettes are being revealed – masterpieces of exceptional sculpting art that was developed in the islands of Cyclades. The marble used for the making of those sculptures still abounds in a great variety in the present days at the local marble quarries of the islands.

Throughout the classical antiquity, marble’s unique properties will endorse it as the raw material of supreme statues and architectural monuments of humanity. Marbles from Penteli, Paros, Naxos, Tinos, Thassos have given their bright flesh to a number of world famous statues like

   Hermes of Praxitelis
   Aphrodite of Milos
   Nike of Samothraki

and have taken the shape of Parthenon and Acropolis of Athens. These great architectural monuments are the Greek cultural heritage to the humanity.

Archaeological excavations at the ancient marble quarries revealed that the way marbles were quarried was similar to the one used by the quarrymen a few years ago. Nowadays, the vast technological development has also influenced and improved the contemporary quarrying equipment. According to the specialists in the marble field, Greece has inexhaustible and remarkable marble deposits in a great variety and quality. Marble quarries in the island and the mainland have an annual production of around 2.000.000 tones, while the capacity of the factories that cut and process marble is over 2.500.000 tones.
